The semi-final line-up for the CAF Champions League has been confirmed following the elimination of both Egyptian representatives, with Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. among the teams to progress.
Sundowns secured their place in the last four despite a 2-0 defeat to Stade Malien in Bamako on Sunday, advancing 3-2 on aggregate after a strong first-leg performance.
The result marks a fourth consecutive semi-final appearance for the South African side and their sixth overall, underlining their sustained presence among the continent’s leading clubs.
They will now face Espérance Sportive de Tunis in the semi-finals, as they continue their pursuit of continental success.
The second leg in Bamako proved a difficult test for Sundowns, who were immediately put under pressure by the hosts. Stade Malien took the lead inside the opening minute when Taddeus Nkeng rose to head home from close range. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was later awarded following a VAR review.
The early strike set the tone for an intense encounter, with the Malian side pressing aggressively and disrupting Sundowns’ rhythm.
Stade Malien continued to push forward and were rewarded again just before half-time. A scramble in the penalty area allowed Haman Mandjan to react quickest, firing a powerful effort that bounced in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-0 on the night.
At that stage, the tie was finely balanced, with Sundowns’ aggregate advantage reduced and momentum firmly in favour of the hosts.
Despite the pressure, Sundowns held on to their aggregate lead, ensuring their progression to the semi-finals.
The confirmation of the final four comes after a series of tightly contested quarter-final ties, with the elimination of Egyptian clubs marking a notable shift in the competition’s landscape.
Sundowns’ continued presence at this stage highlights their consistency in recent years, as they aim to convert regular deep runs into another Champions League title.
