Former Liverpool FC captain Graeme Souness has said forward Mohamed Salah should consider leaving the club at the end of the season, citing a decline in performance as a key factor behind the team’s struggles.
Salah, who has been central to Liverpool’s attacking success in recent years, has scored just five Premier League goals this season. The Egyptian forward’s reduced output comes during a period of inconsistent form for the club, prompting questions about both his future and Liverpool’s overall direction.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Souness suggested the 31-year-old’s influence has waned and that a departure from Anfield may be the best course of action for both player and club.
“His best is behind him now, there’s no doubt about that. The first person to know that is yourself, and it happens to everyone,” Souness said.
The former midfielder, who enjoyed a decorated spell with Liverpool during his playing career, pointed to Salah’s goal return as a decisive factor in the team’s current difficulties.
“I don’t see the same sparkle. I think if you’re looking for the single biggest reason (for Liverpool’s shaky form), it’s because he’s not been getting the numbers,” he added.
Salah has been widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s most influential players since joining the club, consistently delivering goals and decisive performances over multiple seasons. His contributions have often been pivotal in turning matches in Liverpool’s favour, earning him recognition as one of the Premier League’s elite forwards.
Souness acknowledged Salah’s past achievements, describing him as a transformative figure at the club, but maintained that his peak years may now be over.
“He’s been for six, seven years the Liverpool go-to man. He has completely changed games when it wasn’t going their way, and he has scored a ridiculous number of goals every season,” he said.
Despite that legacy, Souness believes the time may be right for a change, reiterating his view that Salah’s most productive period has passed.
“He’s a great – a Liverpool great – but his best season is behind him.”
Salah has produced 11 goal involvements in 22 league games.
