Senegal turn to unbeaten CAS lawyer in bid to reclaim AFCON crown

Senegal have strengthened their bid to overturn the controversial decision to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title by appointing leading sports lawyer Serge Vittoz to represent them at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The move signals a significant escalation in the West African nation’s response to the ruling, with officials seeking to challenge the outcome through legal channels after losing the title following a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Vittoz, widely regarded as one of the foremost figures in sports law, brings extensive experience in handling disputes involving football and major international competitions.

His track record at CAS is particularly notable, with the lawyer reportedly having an unblemished record in cases he has argued before the body.

The appointment is being seen as a major boost to Senegal’s chances as they prepare to contest one of the most contentious decisions in recent African football history.

The AFCON final controversy centres on CAF’s decision to overturn Senegal’s 1-0 victory and instead award the title to Morocco, citing a breach of tournament regulations.

Senegal have since moved swiftly to challenge the ruling, insisting they were unfairly stripped of a title they won on the pitch.

Bringing in Vittoz reflects Senegal’s intent to pursue the matter aggressively, relying on both legal expertise and previous experience in similar cases.

The lawyer is no stranger to Senegalese football disputes.

He previously played a role in the country’s successful case against South Africa in 2017.

That dispute, initially handled by FIFA and later resolved at CAS, resulted in the annulment of the original outcome and the ordering of a replay, which ultimately worked in Senegal’s favour.

That precedent is likely to offer encouragement to Senegal as they prepare for another high-stakes legal battle on the international stage.

The case is expected to focus on the interpretation and application of tournament regulations, as well as whether CAF’s decision to overturn the result was consistent with its own rules.

With Vittoz’s experience in navigating complex legal frameworks in football, Senegal will be hoping to build a strong argument capable of reversing the decision.

Beyond the legal proceedings, the dispute has attracted widespread attention across the football world, raising broader questions about governance, fairness and the application of rules in major competitions.

Meanwhile, CAF President Patrice Motsepe said his outfit will abide and respect the legal outcome at CAS.
