Seko Fofana set for Rennes return after short-lived Porto spell

Ivory Coast international Seko Fofana is set to return to France after FC Porto decided not to activate their option to make his loan move permanent, bringing his brief spell in Portugal to an end.

The 31-year-old midfielder joined the Primeira Liga champions on loan from Stade Rennais in February 2026, but will now head back to Ligue 1 after just five months with the Portuguese side.

Porto confirmed the decision on Friday, announcing the player’s departure through an official statement, marking the end of what has been a short but productive spell for the experienced midfielder.

Although Fofana produced solid performances during his time in Portugal, the club ultimately chose not to extend his stay beyond the loan agreement.

The Ivorian featured regularly for Porto, making 18 appearances across all competitions. During that period, he scored three goals and registered one assist, contributing to the team’s domestic success.

His involvement also came as Porto secured the Portuguese league title, with Fofana playing a role in the club’s championship-winning campaign before his departure was confirmed.

Despite the decision to part ways, his performances were acknowledged by the Portuguese club, who paid tribute to his contribution.

“Your mark will forever be etched on our title. Congratulations on the next step, Fofana,” FC Porto wrote in their farewell message.

Fofana remains under contract with Stade Rennais until June 2029, meaning he will now return to the French club as part of their long-term plans.

According to Transfermarkt, the midfielder’s current market value stands at around €8 million, while he is reported to earn an annual salary of €4.55 million.

His return is expected to be welcomed in Brittany, where Rennes are preparing for the next phase of their squad rebuilding. The club is also believed to be anticipating the influence of experienced players as they aim to strengthen their midfield options.

Fofana’s next step could also see him reunited with coach Franck Haise, a manager he previously worked with during his time at RC Lens, where he developed into one of Ligue 1’s most influential midfielders.

The Ivorian has had a well-travelled career, with previous spells including moves to Al-Nassr and Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia before returning to European football.
