Head coach Alexandre Santos says AS FAR are approaching the CAF Champions League final with calm confidence and a clear sense of purpose as they prepare to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg.
Speaking to Confederation of African Football, Santos described his side’s preparations as intense but balanced, with equal focus on tactical organisation, physical readiness and mental strength ahead of the decisive encounter in Pretoria.
The Portuguese coach indicated that the mood within the squad reflects maturity and concentration, with players fully aware of the magnitude of the challenge they face against one of Africa’s most consistent sides.
“We know very well the strength of our opponent; they are a well-organized team with considerable experience in African competitions,” Santos noted. “Therefore, we are focusing on tactical discipline, minimizing mistakes, and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.”
Sundowns’ pedigree on the continent has not been lost on the Moroccan side, with Santos highlighting the South African champions’ structure, experience and ability to deliver in key moments as major threats.
AS FAR’s technical team have reportedly prioritised game management and decision-making under pressure, recognising that fine margins often determine outcomes in fixtures of this scale. The coach also pointed to the importance of experienced players within his squad, suggesting their exposure to high-level competition could prove decisive.
Beyond tactical considerations, Santos emphasised unity and mentality as central pillars of his team’s approach. He described reaching the final as both an honour and a responsibility for a club of AS FAR’s stature.
“It carries a great responsibility and a great honor at the same time,” Santos said. “AS FAR is a prestigious club, and its fans deserve to celebrate a new continental title. We will fight to bring the trophy back to its rightful place.”
The Moroccan club are seeking to end a wait of more than four decades for a second continental title, adding further significance to the occasion.
While acknowledging the pressure that comes with a Champions League final, Santos insisted it is being embraced positively within the squad. He said players have been encouraged to remain composed, confident and respectful of their opponents, without allowing the occasion to overwhelm them.
As anticipation builds, the coach also underlined the role of supporters in driving the team forward.
“You are our true source of strength,” he said. “We promise to fight on the pitch with all our spirit and responsibility to make you happy and honor the AS FAR jersey.”
With both sides preparing for a high-stakes tactical battle, attention now turns to Pretoria, where the opening chapter of the final will unfold with continental glory firmly in sight.
