SAFA dismisses reports of Hugo Broos contract extension

South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has firmly denied reports that Hugo Broos has been handed a new one-year contract to remain as Bafana Bafana head coach, insisting no decision has yet been made on the Belgian’s future.

Broos, 74, previously indicated that he intended to step down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his current contract due to expire at the end of this month.

Jordaan rejects extension claims

Recent reports suggested Broos had agreed to a 12-month extension that would keep him in charge through the next Africa Cup of Nations, but Jordaan dismissed those claims outright after returning from the World Cup.

“One thing I can say is that there is no such thing that SAFA signed a one-year contract with Broos. It doesn’t exist. It’s nonsense,” Jordaan told reporters.

“It’s better that this nonsense is not put out there. I just came back yesterday and I saw this. What is this now? It’s nonsense.”

Decision to follow SAFA process

Jordaan stressed that any decision regarding the national team coach would follow SAFA’s established governance procedures.

“We have a coach and we will deal with it. There is a process,” he said.

He explained that the technical committee first makes a recommendation before the matter is considered by the National Executive Committee, which has the final authority to appoint or retain the national team coach.

“The technical team makes a recommendation to the National Executive Committee. The National Executive Committee finally decides on the coach.”

Frustration with media questions

The SAFA president became visibly frustrated when repeatedly questioned about Broos’ future, pointing out that he had only just returned to South Africa and had not yet met with federation officials.

He urged patience, insisting that no formal discussions had taken place since his arrival.

Future remains uncertain

Broos’ position therefore remains unresolved, with neither a contract extension nor his departure officially confirmed.

If the Belgian leaves his role, former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has been widely linked with a return to the national team. However, SAFA has not commented on any potential successors, maintaining that all decisions will be announced only after the federation’s internal processes have been completed.
