Sadio Mané marks 125th Senegal appearance with 53rd international goal

Sadio Mané celebrated his 125th appearance for Senegal by scoring his 53rd international goal as the Lions of Teranga battled the United States in a World Cup warm-up match in Charlotte.

The Senegal captain once again demonstrated his importance to the national team, finding the net in a friendly encounter that forms part of the West African side’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For Senegal, the occasion was about more than simply preparing for football’s biggest tournament. It also provided another chapter in the remarkable international career of Mané, who continues to add to an already impressive record with the national team.

The match at Bank of America Stadium marked the first senior-level meeting between Senegal and the United States.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw opted for a mixed starting line-up in a 4-3-3 formation, handing Bara Sapoko Ndiaye his first start for the Lions.

The hosts made a strong start and immediately put the Senegalese defence under pressure. After creating an early opportunity, the Americans took the lead in the seventh minute when Sergiño Dest finished a move set up by Christian Pulisic.

Senegal attempted to respond through their experienced attacking players. In the 11th minute, Mané was released by Nicolas Jackson and raced towards goal, but United States goalkeeper Matt Turner reacted quickly to collect the ball.

Jackson then had an opportunity of his own three minutes later, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

The United States doubled their advantage in the 20th minute.

Christian Pulisic capitalised on a lapse in concentration from goalkeeper Mory Diaw to give the home side a commanding lead.

Despite falling two goals behind, Senegal continued to search for a route back into the contest. Bara Sapoko Ndiaye tried his luck from distance, while Iliman Ndiaye came close after being played through on goal, only for Turner to make another important save.

Mané also looked threatening as the half progressed, forcing the American defence to remain alert whenever he got on the ball.

The breakthrough eventually arrived just before the interval.

In the 44th minute, Habib Diarra provided the decisive pass and Mané calmly finished the move to reduce the deficit. The goal not only gave Senegal renewed hope but also represented another milestone in the forward’s international career.

By scoring against the United States, Mané took his tally to 53 goals for Senegal in 125 appearances, reinforcing his status as one of the most influential players in the history of the national team.

The strike was another reminder of the consistency that has made the former African Footballer of the Year a central figure for Senegal over the years. Whether in competitive fixtures or friendly matches, the 33-year-old continues to deliver important contributions for the Lions.

The match remained significant for coach Pape Thiaw as he continues to fine-tune his squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The friendly offered an opportunity to assess established stars alongside newer faces within the national team setup.

At the time of writing, the United States led Senegal 3-2. Sergiño Dest, Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun were on target for the hosts, while Mané’s milestone strike and an Antonee Robinson own goal kept the Lions in contention.

Regardless of the final outcome, the evening provided another memorable moment for Mané, whose goalscoring record continues to grow as Senegal build towards their next major challenge on the world stage.
