Rulani Mokwena closes in on Pyramids move after lucrative contract offer

South African coach Rulani Mokwena is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach of Egyptian giants Pyramids FC after receiving a lucrative contract offer worth approximately $120,000 per month for himself and his technical team.

The 39-year-old is expected to leave Libyan side Al Ittihad, with an official announcement regarding his departure believed to be imminent.

Mokwena has been in charge of the Libyan club since February 2026 after departing Algerian side MC Alger, where he guided the club to Algerian Cup success.

However, his spell in Libya failed to produce major silverware, with Al Ittihad missing out on both the Libyan Premier League title and the Libyan Cup. The disappointing finish reportedly led to growing criticism from sections of the club’s supporters.

Reports over the weekend indicated that Mokwena had decided to resign as Al Ittihad began preparations for the 2026/27 campaign, paving the way for a move to Egypt.

Pyramids table lucrative proposal

According to Egyptian publication El Balad, Pyramids have offered Mokwena a one-year contract covering both the South African coach and his technical staff.

The proposed deal is reportedly worth around $120,000 per month, while also including performance-related bonuses and an option to extend the agreement by mutual consent.

The incentives are said to be linked to success in both domestic and continental competitions, with additional rewards available should Mokwena guide Pyramids to the Egyptian Premier League title or CAF Champions League glory.

Despite the attractive financial package, reports suggest the proposed salary remains lower than that previously earned by former Pyramids head coach Krunoslav Jurčić.

New chapter awaits

Should the move be completed, Mokwena would take charge of one of Africa’s most ambitious clubs as Pyramids continue their pursuit of sustained domestic and continental success.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has earned a reputation as one of the continent’s brightest young tacticians, and a move to Egypt would represent another significant step in a managerial career that has already taken him across South Africa, Algeria and Libya.

An official confirmation is now expected once Al Ittihad finalise Mokwena’s departure, clearing the way for his appointment at Pyramids.
