Yamal escapes attempted burglary after Spain reach World Cup final

Spain forward Lamine Yamal was reportedly the target of an attempted burglary just hours after helping his country defeat France 2-0 to reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports in Spain, two suspected intruders attempted to enter the teenager’s luxury home near Barcelona before fleeing after being detected by security personnel. The incident has prompted a police investigation and once again raised concerns about elite footballers becoming frequent targets for organised criminals.

The attempted break-in came shortly after Spain secured a place in the World Cup final, where they will face either England or Argentina.

The incident is likely to resonate across African football as well, with many of the continent’s biggest stars playing in Europe’s top leagues and facing similar security risks away from the pitch.

Reports indicate that Yamal’s security guard noticed two individuals through surveillance cameras after they climbed onto the wall surrounding the property.

The suspects reportedly fled before the footballer’s private security team was able to contact police.

Spain’s Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) has since taken charge of the case as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the attempted burglary.

Authorities reportedly believe the incident may be linked to a wider pattern of criminal activity in the exclusive Esplugues neighbourhood, where at least two other robberies have recently been reported.

Yamal’s home, located around 20 minutes from central Barcelona, is among the area’s best-known properties. According to the reports, the residence previously belonged to former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué and Colombian singer Shakira.

The property is valued at approximately €11 million and spans around 3,800 square metres across five levels.

It reportedly includes two private swimming pools, a football pitch, a paddle court, a gymnasium and a recording studio.

Investigators are also examining whether the attempted burglary fits a growing trend in which organised criminal groups travel across Europe targeting the homes of professional footballers.

Luxury watches, jewellery and other valuable possessions have frequently been the focus of such raids, particularly when players are away representing their clubs or countries.

Reports suggest Yamal’s social media presence, where he has shared images of jewellery and aspects of his luxury lifestyle, may have increased the visibility of the property, although investigators have not confirmed whether this played any role in the attempted burglary.

The incident occurred during what has otherwise been a memorable period for the young Spain international.

Yamal helped Spain overcome France 2-0 in the World Cup semi-finals to move within one victory of lifting football’s biggest prize.

While preparations continue for the final, the attempted burglary serves as another reminder of the security challenges faced by some of the world’s leading footballers away from the game.

For football fans across Africa, where Yamal’s performances have attracted widespread admiration during the tournament, the incident highlights the pressures that can accompany global stardom, even during the biggest moments of a player’s career.

Police investigations into the attempted break-in are continuing.
