Reda Tagnaouti edges closer to Morocco world cup squad spot

Reda Tagnaouti appears increasingly likely to secure a place in Morocco national football team’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a series of influential performances with AS FAR.

The goalkeeper has emerged as one of the key figures behind the club’s strong continental campaign this season, playing a major role in helping the Moroccan side reach the final of the CAF Champions League.

Although Tagnaouti came under criticism for a positioning mistake that led to a goal during the first leg of the final against Mamelodi Sundowns, his overall display was widely praised.

The goalkeeper produced several important saves across both halves of the match, preventing what could have been a significantly heavier defeat and keeping his team’s hopes alive ahead of the decisive return leg in Rabat.

According to information emerging from Morocco’s national team training centre in Maamoura, Tagnaouti has strengthened his position within the extended squad being monitored by coach Mohamed Wahbi.

Reports suggest the Royal Army goalkeeper is now expected to be included in the final World Cup squad as Morocco’s third-choice goalkeeper behind the experienced pair of Yassine Bounou and Munir Mohamedi.

His anticipated return to the national setup would mark a significant recovery after a period in which he had fallen out of favour with the coaching staff.

Tagnaouti’s recent performances have reportedly reshaped the competition among Moroccan goalkeepers competing for places in the World Cup squad.

The AS FAR goalkeeper is now believed to have overtaken Mehdi Benabid of Wydad AC in the selection hierarchy.

He has also moved ahead of Mehdi El Harrar from Raja Club Athletic following what has been described as intense competition for the available positions.

Salah Eddine Chehab, goalkeeper for Maghreb de Fès, had also reportedly been considered among the candidates.

However, Tagnaouti’s recent continental displays and his previous international experience appear to have convinced the Moroccan coaching staff.

Reports indicate that Wahbi and his Portuguese assistant Sacramento have now settled on Tagnaouti’s profile because of his ability to handle pressure in major competitions.

The expected inclusion of the goalkeeper is being viewed as recognition for his consistent performances and development during his time with AS FAR.

Tagnaouti has quietly rebuilt both his physical and mental form in recent months and has become one of the team’s most reliable performers.

His potential World Cup selection could also provide additional motivation as AS FAR continue pursuing continental success ahead of the second leg of the CAF Champions League final in Rabat.

Afterward, the goalkeeper could join Morocco’s delegation travelling to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Statistically, Tagnaouti has enjoyed an impressive campaign with AS FAR.

In the Moroccan league, he has played 15 matches, conceding eight goals while keeping 10 clean sheets.

In the CAF Champions League, he has conceded six goals and recorded four clean sheets, numbers that have strengthened his case for inclusion in Morocco’s final World Cup squad.
