RC Lens secure rising Malian talent Souleymane Sagnan until 2030

French club RC Lens have secured the future of promising Malian defender Souleymane Sagnan after handing him a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2030.

The long-term extension reflects Lens’ confidence in the 20-year-old centre-back, who has emerged as one of the most highly regarded prospects within the club’s youth system.

Sagnan has impressed with his defensive strength, ability in one-on-one situations and confidence when playing with the ball, qualities that have convinced Lens to commit to his development for the years ahead.

The Malian defender’s journey at Lens has been built through steady progression. Before earning his new deal, Sagnan established himself as a key figure for the club’s reserve side, where he played a leading role in National 3.

His performances at youth level eventually brought him closer to the senior squad, with the defender receiving his first Ligue 1 call-up in March 2025 for Lens’ away match against Marseille.

Although he has yet to fully establish himself as a first-team regular, the club’s decision shows their belief that he has the potential to become an important player in the future.

Sagnan has also continued his development on the international stage with Mali.

In June 2025, he was selected for the Maurice Revello Tournament, a respected competition showcasing some of the best young talents from around the world.

The defender played a role as Mali finished fifth in the tournament before earning his first appearance for the country’s Under-23 team a few weeks later.

The 2025/26 season proved another important stage in his career when Lens sent him on loan to SM Caen to gain regular playing time.

The move allowed Sagnan to experience more competitive football, and he quickly became an important part of Caen’s defence.

He made 17 appearances in Ligue 3 during his loan spell, performances that further highlighted his potential.

His progress convinced Lens that he was a player worth securing for the long term, leading to the new contract agreement.

The defender’s current market value is estimated at €500,000 by Transfermarkt, but Lens believe his potential could see that figure increase significantly as he continues to develop.

For Mali, Sagnan represents another emerging defensive talent capable of strengthening the national team’s future options.
