Portugal secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly at Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa on Wednesday night, with Francisco Conceição’s second-half winner proving decisive in a closely contested encounter.
The hosts took the lead midway through the first half after a move involving Diego Galot and Pedro Neto produced the opening goal. Galot provided the assist, allowing Neto to put Portugal ahead in the 23rd minute and give Roberto Martinez’s side an early advantage.
Portugal continued to press and came close to extending their lead before the interval. Trincao nearly doubled the margin in the 37th minute, but Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye reacted sharply to divert the effort over the crossbar and keep his side within reach.
The Super Eagles responded almost immediately and restored parity later in the same minute. Akor Adams finished confidently after receiving an incisive pass from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, beating Diogo Costa to make it 1-1 and ensure the teams went into the remainder of the half on level terms.
Nigeria’s equaliser rewarded a positive attacking spell and set up an intriguing second half between the two nations.
Portugal sought to regain control after the restart and nearly found a breakthrough within minutes. Substitute Joao Felix attempted an ambitious effort from outside the penalty area just two minutes into the second period, but Okoye once again produced an important save to frustrate the home side.
The Nigerian goalkeeper continued to play a significant role, making a number of interventions that kept Portugal from re-establishing their lead sooner.
One of the evening’s major talking points came in the 65th minute when Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was withdrawn and replaced by Gonçalo Ramos. The veteran forward was unable to add to his career goal tally as he continues his pursuit of the landmark figure of 1,000 goals.
With the contest still finely balanced, Portugal eventually found the decisive moment 15 minutes from time.
Francisco Conceição produced a piece of individual quality to restore his side’s advantage in the 75th minute. Cutting in from the right flank, he created space for himself before driving a shot beyond Okoye to make it 2-1.
The goal ultimately proved enough to separate the teams despite Nigeria’s efforts to find another equaliser during the closing stages.
Portugal maintained their lead through the remainder of the match and successfully saw out the contest to record a narrow victory.
While Nigeria showed resilience by responding to an early setback, Portugal’s persistence and Conceição’s moment of brilliance ensured Martinez’s side emerged victorious at the final whistle.
The result concluded an entertaining friendly in which both teams created opportunities, but it was Portugal who capitalised on the decisive chance to claim a 2-1 win.
