Pitso Mosimane emerges as favourite to replace Hugo Broos as South Africa coach

Experienced South African coach Pitso Mosimane has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Hugo Broos as head coach of Bafana Bafana, with reports suggesting the South African Football Association (SAFA) is considering a change following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to multiple reports in the South African media, Mosimane is the preferred option to lead the national team into the next cycle, with discussions reportedly gathering momentum behind the scenes.

The reports also suggest that Botswana head coach Morena Ramoreboli could join Mosimane’s technical team as an assistant should the appointment be finalised.

Ramoreboli has earned widespread praise for his coaching work in Botswana and previously gained CAF Champions League experience during his spell with Jwaneng Galaxy.

Mosimane, affectionately known as “Jingles”, has been out of frontline coaching for more than a year following his departure from Iranian club Esteghlal FC.

Since then, the 61-year-old has focused on developing young footballers through the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools initiative while waiting for his next coaching opportunity.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished managers, Mosimane has won three CAF Champions League titles during his career—guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to continental glory before adding two more crowns with Egyptian giants Al Ahly. He has also collected numerous domestic league titles in both South Africa and Egypt.

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround the future of current Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan has confirmed that the federation will review South Africa’s World Cup campaign before holding discussions with the Belgian coach regarding his future.

Broos has played a pivotal role in revitalising South African football since taking charge, leading Bafana Bafana to consecutive Africa Cup of Nations qualifications before ending the country’s 16-year absence from the FIFA World Cup.

He also guided South Africa to the knockout stages of the expanded 2026 World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.

With Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaching, SAFA is expected to make a decision on the national team’s coaching position in the coming weeks as preparations begin for the next phase of Bafana Bafana’s development.
