St Éloi Lupopo will not feature in next season’s CAF Champions League after failing to finish among the top two teams in the Democratic Republic of Congo Premier League, ending their hopes of returning to Africa’s premier club competition.
The Lubumbashi-based side fell short in the battle for qualification spots despite entering the season with high expectations following their impressive recent continental exploits.
Lupopo had enjoyed a historic CAF Champions League campaign last season, reaching the group stage for the first time in the club’s history. Their memorable run included a stunning victory over South African giants Orlando Pirates in the second preliminary round, a result that elevated the club’s status on the continental stage.
That achievement created hopes that the Yellow and Blue would become regular competitors among Africa’s elite clubs. However, inconsistent performances in the domestic league proved costly as they failed to secure one of DR Congo’s available Champions League places.
