The Confédération Africaine de Football has expressed strong confidence in the continent’s representatives ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Africa prepares to send a record 10 nations to the global showpiece for the first time in history.
The expanded tournament, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marks a significant milestone for African football, reflecting what CAF describes as the “substantial growth and global competitiveness” of the game on the continent.
Historic Representation for Africa
For decades, African participation at the World Cup had been limited, but the 2026 edition signals a turning point, with 10 teams now representing the continent on football’s biggest stage.
According to CAF, this unprecedented number is not just symbolic but a clear indication of Africa’s rising influence in global football.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe hailed the achievement, emphasizing both pride and ambition as the tournament approaches.
“CAF and African Football are proud of the 10 Countries that will be representing the African Continent at the FIFA World Cup 2026TM,” he said.
“It is the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup that Africa is represented by 10 Countries. This is a recognition of the substantial growth and global competitiveness of African Football.”
Belief in a Historic Breakthrough
Beyond participation, CAF is setting its sights on an even greater achievement — producing the continent’s first-ever World Cup winner.
Motsepe made that ambition clear, expressing confidence that African teams will not only compete but challenge for the ultimate prize.
“We are confident that the African National Teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026 will make us proud and that an African Nation will be Champions of the FIFA World Cup,” he added.
No African nation has ever won the tournament, though sides like Morocco national football team have come close, notably reaching the semi-finals in 2022 — the best performance by an African team in history.
DR Congo’s Qualification Adds to Momentum
CAF also singled out DR Congo national football team for praise following their dramatic qualification.
The Leopards secured their place at the World Cup after defeating Jamaica national football team in the intercontinental playoffs, marking their return to the global stage for the first time in decades.
“We also want to congratulate the Democratic Republic of Congo (“DRC”) for their victory against Jamaica and qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Motsepe said.
Their qualification further strengthens Africa’s representation and adds another competitive side to the continent’s lineup.
A Defining Moment for African Football
With the World Cup drawing closer, CAF’s message is clear: Africa is no longer just participating ; it is ready to compete at the highest level.
The presence of 10 teams offers a unique opportunity for the continent to reshape its global football identity, showcase its talent, and potentially achieve a long-awaited breakthrough.
For African football, 2026 is not just another tournament.
