Broos reflects on emotional Williams moment after Bafana make World Cup history

Hugo Broos has described the emotional bond he shares with captain Ronwen Williams after South Africa’s landmark 1-0 victory over South Korea secured a first-ever place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

The pair were seen embracing at full-time in Monterrey after Thapelo Maseko’s second-half goal sealed a famous win, completing a turnaround that had begun with early doubts in the group stage.

For Broos, the moment went beyond football tactics or tournament pressure, instead reflecting years of shared experience and trust between coach and captain.

“There’s this, when you work five years together, there’s a connection, and it’s more than coach and player,” Broos said.

“We’ve had so many successes, good moments, that it’s more than coach and player, it’s like friends. And I as a coach who tells them what to do. It’s a fantastic combination.”

The victory ensured Bafana Bafana progressed from a World Cup group stage for the first time in their history, marking a significant milestone for a team that had faced early scepticism following their opening defeat.

Broos admitted the closing stages against South Korea were tense, with South Africa forced to dig deep to protect their slender lead.

“We hoped that as soon as possible the referee could blow the final whistle, that the game was finished, and that we were in the next round, that was the goal before the tournament started,” he said.

“Okay, the first game wasn’t good, but we’ve become better and better.”

South Africa’s campaign began with a disappointing defeat, but they recovered with a draw against the Czech Republic before producing a disciplined and determined display to beat South Korea in what effectively became a knockout decider.

The result means Bafana Bafana will now face Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line if they can continue their remarkable run.

Despite the magnitude of the achievement already secured, Broos insists his team are not finished yet and believes further progress is possible.

“In the next game we will see, we don’t have to do something, we just have to try and enjoy this and try,” he said. “Maybe, who knows, maybe we can go to the third round.”

Kick-off against Canada is scheduled for 21:00 SA time on Sunday, 28 June, with South Africa continuing to carry African hopes deeper into the tournament after a historic night in Monterrey.
