New Era Begins as Algeria Shift Focus to Youth and Future

Algeria begin transition phase as coach turns focus to long-term rebuild following World Cup progress

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković has stepped up plans to reshape the national team, moving into a new phase of his rebuilding project after securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to sources close to WinWin.

The decision marks a significant shift in direction for the Swiss manager, who had previously prioritised short-term results, particularly World Cup qualification, over squad renewal. His latest squad selection for the March training camp appears to confirm a renewed emphasis on youth development and long-term planning.

Transition From Stability to Renewal

When Petković was appointed as successor to Djamel Belmadi, his mandate included rejuvenating the national side. However, time constraints and pressure to deliver immediate results meant he initially relied heavily on an established core of experienced players.

This approach drew sustained criticism from fans and media in Algeria, with many accusing the coach of depending too much on Belmadi’s existing framework rather than implementing his own vision.

That criticism now appears to have prompted a strategic pivot.

Youth Integration Gains Momentum

Sources indicate that the renewal process has gathered pace since October, with several emerging players quickly establishing themselves as key figures within the squad. Among those who have made a rapid impact are Samir Cherki, Rafik Belghali, Luca Zidane and Ibrahim Maza.

Their integration comes ahead of a major continental test at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, underlining the urgency behind Petković’s plans.

The upcoming friendlies against Guatemala and Uruguay further highlight this shift, with six new players included in the squad as part of an expanded evaluation process.

“Building the Future”

Petković defended his selection strategy during a press conference announcing the March squad, emphasising the importance of long-term development.

“I wanted to bring in new players to give them the opportunity to build the future of Algerian football,”

His comments signal a clear departure from earlier phases of his tenure, when immediate qualification targets limited his ability to experiment with younger talent.

Emerging Generation Takes Shape

Algeria’s squad now features a growing pool of promising players, many of whom are in their early twenties. Among them are Ibrahim Maza (20), Amine Chiakhah (20), Anis Hadj Moussa (24), Yassine Titraoui (22), Adel Boulbina (22) and Rafik Belghali (23).

New additions such as goalkeeper Kilian Belazouk (19) and Fares Ghezimes (23) further reinforce the depth of the next generation.

This influx of youth reflects a broader strategic framework agreed between Petković and the Algerian Football Federation, centred on phased renewal and gradual squad evolution.

A Project Reaches Its Peak

According to sources, the rebuilding plan has now reached its most intensive stage, particularly in the aftermath of developments linked to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

With qualification pressures eased, Petković is expected to continue experimenting with new combinations and giving younger players increased responsibility, as Algeria prepare not only for upcoming tournaments but also for a more sustainable future.
