Napoli are monitoring Barcelona midfielder Gavi, but the Spain international has no intention of leaving the club in either the winter or summer transfer window.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it, Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has contacted Gavi’s representatives to ask about the player’s plans and assess whether a transfer could be possible.
Napoli would reportedly prefer to sign Gavi on loan with an option to buy, which would allow them to avoid paying a substantial transfer fee immediately. However, the proposed move faces two significant obstacles: Barcelona do not want to release the midfielder, while Gavi has no desire to move on.
Gavi’s playing time has so far fallen below his expectations, but he remains an important part of manager Flick’s plans. The coach values the midfielder’s competitive character, intensity and ability to control the rhythm of a match.
Barcelona’s busy schedule across several competitions is another reason Flick regards Gavi as essential to the squad. His presence provides depth in midfield and helps the team remain competitive throughout the season.
The 20-year-old has endured two serious injuries and recognises that he must be patient as he works towards returning to his best level. Although he is unhappy with his limited number of appearances, he is not considering offers from elsewhere or looking to force a transfer.
Several Premier League clubs approached Gavi last summer, but he rejected every proposal. Having recently extended his contract with Barcelona, he wants to remain at Camp Nou for the long term and ultimately end his career there.
Barcelona share that view and consider Gavi an important player for both the present and the future. The club has no plans to begin negotiations over a sale.
Flick also expects Gavi’s influence to increase as the season progresses. The manager believes the midfielder will gradually recover his best form and secure more opportunities in the starting line-up.
Napoli can therefore do little more than continue to follow the situation. Manna may remain in contact with Gavi’s representatives, but the player’s position is clear: he wants to stay at Barcelona and compete for his starting place again.
