Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi has confirmed he will not take charge of Wydad Athletic Club during the current season, instead proposing to assume the role at the start of the next campaign.
In comments given to WinWin, Nabi provided insight into discussions with Wydad’s management following the departure of Patrice Carteron, who recently left his position as head coach.
Refusal to join mid-season
Nabi made clear that the timing of the vacancy was a decisive factor in his decision, pointing to the challenges associated with taking over a team in the latter stages of a competitive season.
He explained that the compressed fixture schedule and the importance of the remaining matches would make it difficult to implement his tactical approach effectively. As a result, he indicated that accepting the role immediately would not align with his professional standards or long-term vision for the team.
Instead, Nabi proposed a delayed appointment, suggesting he would be willing to take charge following the conclusion of the current season.
Proposal for long-term planning
The coach stated that beginning his tenure during the summer break would allow him to properly prepare for the upcoming campaign. This would include establishing tactical frameworks, evaluating the squad and setting broader strategic objectives.
Nabi’s approach reflects a preference for structured planning rather than short-term intervention, particularly at a club aiming to compete for major honours. His proposal is designed to give him sufficient time to implement his philosophy and oversee a comprehensive rebuilding phase.
He also noted that his name had previously been under consideration by Wydad’s management, even before Carteron’s appointment in April, alongside other candidates such as Hussein Ammouta.
Interim solution in place
In the meantime, Wydad appear set to rely on an internal solution to navigate the remainder of the season. Ben Cherifa has taken temporary charge of the team, with the club opting for what has been described as an “emergency coach” strategy.
This approach is intended to stabilise results and guide the team through the remaining fixtures with minimal disruption, while longer-term decisions are finalised.
Anticipated appointment timeline
Wydad’s management is reportedly considering postponing any formal announcement regarding Nabi’s appointment until June. Such a timeline would align with the end of the current football season and the beginning of preparations for the next.
The plan would enable the club to transition into a new phase under Nabi’s leadership, focusing on rebuilding and returning to a competitive level domestically and beyond.
Strategic delay reflects long-term ambition
Nabi’s decision to defer his potential appointment highlights the complexities of mid-season managerial changes. While Wydad require immediate stability, the Tunisian coach has prioritised long-term success over a rapid takeover.
As the club continues under interim leadership, attention will shift to whether both parties can formalise an agreement in the coming months. Should the move materialise, it is expected to mark the beginning of a new strategic direction aimed at restoring Wydad’s position among the leading teams in Moroccan football.
