Mbappe faces Clasico sweat as suspension threat looms

Kylian Mbappe’s extraordinary scoring run for Real Madrid this season has placed him at the centre of the club’s title ambitions, yet disciplinary concerns now threaten to sideline the French forward at a crucial moment in the campaign.

The 25-year-old continued his prolific form by scoring in Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves at the Santiago Bernabeu last Tuesday, taking his tally to 41 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions. His consistency in front of goal has made him the standout performer in Spain this season.

Mbappe currently leads the Spanish top-flight scoring charts with 24 goals from 27 matches, holding a three-goal advantage over Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi in the race for the prestigious Pichichi award. He is expected to have another opportunity to extend that lead when Real Madrid face Real Betis at La Cartuja on Friday.

However, attention has increasingly shifted from his goal-scoring exploits to his disciplinary record. Mbappe has already accumulated four yellow cards in the domestic league, leaving him one booking away from an automatic one-match suspension.

Those cautions came at different stages of the campaign: against Osasuna on the opening day for a foul, versus Real Sociedad for time-wasting, and later against Elche and Girona for dissent. As a result, any further caution will trigger a ban at a critical stage of the season.

The timing of that potential suspension has raised particular concern within the club. Real Madrid are scheduled to face Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday, May 10 at the Spotify Camp Nou, a fixture that could prove decisive in the title race. Losing Mbappe for that encounter would represent a significant blow.

According to Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”, there is speculation that Mbappe could deliberately incur his fifth yellow card during Friday’s match against Real Betis. Doing so would see him serve his suspension in the subsequent league fixture against Espanyol, rather than risk missing the clash with Barcelona.

If booked against Betis, Mbappe would be unavailable for the match against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. However, avoiding a caution on Friday would leave him in a precarious position, requiring him to navigate the Espanyol fixture without picking up a booking to ensure his availability for El Clasico.

For Real Madrid, the situation presents a delicate balance between immediate performance and long-term strategy. With Mbappe in exceptional scoring form, his presence could be decisive in both matches. Yet the risk of losing him for one of the season’s most significant fixtures looms large.

As the title race intensifies, all eyes will be on Mbappe—not just for his goals, but for whether he can avoid the disciplinary setback that could define Real Madrid’s season.
