Manchester City have completed the signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £116m, making the England international the most expensive player in the club’s history.
The 23-year-old midfielder has agreed a five-year contract at Etihad Stadium, City confirmed on Thursday evening, after just one season at Nottingham Forest where he quickly established himself as a key figure at the City Ground.
Anderson, who came through the academy at Newcastle United before joining Forest in 2024, had been identified by City as a long-term midfield target. His arrival further strengthens a squad that has dominated English football in recent seasons.
Record-breaking transfer
According to BBC reports, the fee for Anderson stands at £116m. The move was initially poised to set a new benchmark as the most expensive transfer in British football history, but that distinction was overtaken when Morgan Rogers completed a £117m switch from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
Despite that, Anderson’s transfer represents a record outlay for Manchester City, surpassing all previous signings made by the Premier League champions.
City regard Anderson as a complete central midfielder, capable of operating in both defensive and attacking roles. He is noted for his energy in the middle of the pitch, strong tackling and creative passing, attributes that have helped mark him out as one of the most highly rated young players in the Premier League.
Anderson: City move ‘an opportunity to test myself’
Speaking to Manchester City’s official website after finalising the move, Anderson said he had no hesitation once he learned of the club’s interest.
“Manchester City is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the squad they have is amazing and strong in every position,” he said.
“As soon as I heard they wanted to sign me, I was completely determined to get the deal done.
“As a footballer, you always want to test yourself at the highest level, and joining Manchester City gives me that opportunity.
“Manchester City is built to win trophies and compete at the highest level, and that’s something that excites any football player.”
Rapid rise from Newcastle to City
Anderson began his professional career at Newcastle United, progressing through the youth ranks before breaking into the first-team squad. His performances there attracted interest, and in 2024 he moved to Nottingham Forest, where he swiftly became one of the first names on the teamsheet.
At Forest, his blend of work rate, physicality and technical quality saw him stand out in midfield, enhancing his reputation across the league and prompting City to move for him in this window.
Now an England international and a record signing for Manchester City, Anderson will be expected to compete immediately for a place in a midfield already rich in options, as City continue to build a squad designed to challenge for major honours on all fronts.
