Man Utd renew Aurelien Tchouameni pursuit as Casemiro replacement – but Real Madrid exit unlikely

Manchester United have revived their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as they search for a long-term replacement for Casemiro – but any move is expected to be extremely difficult, according to reports.

The Premier League club are actively in the market for a defensive midfielder following Casemiro’s departure to MLS side Inter Miami, and see the France international as one of the leading options to anchor their midfield.

United make fresh Tchouameni enquiry

The Sun reports that United have again asked about Tchouameni’s situation at Real Madrid during the current summer transfer window, having previously made contact in January and at the start of the close season.

At that time, all indications from Spain suggested that Tchouameni would remain at the Santiago Bernabeu and was even close to agreeing an extension to his current deal.

Despite that, United have returned to explore whether there is any possibility of prising the 24-year-old away from the European champions as they reshape their midfield options.

Tchouameni, a mainstay for France at international level, is viewed internally at Old Trafford as a specialist defensive midfielder – the specific profile the club has prioritised since sanctioning Casemiro’s move to the United States.

Profile matches United’s criteria

United are understood to be working to a clear set of criteria for their new holding midfielder: a relatively young player, with natural defensive instincts, capable of protecting the back line and bringing balance to the side.

Those requirements are seen as being closely met by Tchouameni, who has operated primarily at the base of midfield for both Real Madrid and France, combining ball-winning ability with composure in possession.

By contrast, new arrivals Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans are regarded as more attack-minded midfielders who prefer playing further forward, making the need for a natural defensive pivot even more pressing.

The club’s recruitment team are therefore continuing to study Tchouameni among other candidates as they look to rebuild a central area that has undergone significant change since last season.

Real Madrid plans pose major obstacle

Any hopes United may have of completing a deal, however, are likely to be complicated by Real Madrid’s own plans for the player.

The report states it is “clear” that Jose Mourinho is counting on the Frenchman for the 2026-2027 season, underlining how highly he is valued in Madrid’s long-term planning. That strategic importance is expected to make negotiations for a transfer extremely difficult.

With Tchouameni apparently settled in Spain and previously reported to be close to a contract renewal, United face a major challenge if they are to turn their renewed interest into a concrete agreement.

For now, Tchouameni remains one option on a shortlist as United continue their search for a specialist defensive midfielder capable of filling the void left by Casemiro – but prising him away from the Bernabeu would likely demand both a substantial fee and a significant change in Real Madrid’s stance.
