Malian striker Sékou Oumar Maïga earns trial at Ligue 1 side Marseille

Young Malian striker Sékou Oumar Maïga is set to take a major step in his career after being offered a trial at French Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille.

The forward, who is also known by the nickname “Mbappé”, currently plays for Binga FC in Mali and has been one of the standout performers in the domestic league this season, scoring eight goals.

His performances have attracted attention beyond West Africa, with Marseille now giving him an opportunity to train with the club in France.

Maïga’s development has been shaped by spells at CAS Sevaré and Arsenal Talent Sportif, where he refined the attacking qualities that have made him one of the most promising young forwards in Mali.

His versatility in the final third has been highlighted as one of his strongest attributes.

Sources indicate that the arrangement for the trial is almost complete, and the player is expected to travel to Marseille in the coming days.

The move represents a significant opportunity for the youngster to showcase his talent in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Should the trial prove successful, Maïga could follow a pathway previously taken by other Malian and African players who have made their mark at the French club.

Marseille have a long-standing relationship with African football, having featured several prominent names over the years.

Among the most famous are Abedi Pelé, Didier Drogba and Mamadou Niang, all of whom played key roles in the club’s history.

More recently, players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Chancel Mbemba, Pape Gueye, Bamba Dieng and Taye Taiwo have also represented the club, underlining its continued connection with African talent.

The club has also previously been led by former president Pape Diouf, a key figure in strengthening that relationship.

Maïga could also find familiar faces at the club, with reports suggesting he may link up with compatriots Soumaïla Traoré and Nouhoum Kamissoko, the latter of whom recently made his first-team debut against FC Lorient.

The trial comes at a time when Marseille are competing in the upper half of Ligue 1.

The club currently sit sixth in the table with 52 points, as they continue their push for European qualification.

As he prepares for the move, attention will now turn to how he adapts to the demands of European football and whether he can take advantage of what could be a career-defining opportunity.
