Malang Sarr is poised to turn his back on a return to Ligue 1 with Marseille and instead sign for ambitious Saudi Arabian side Neom, according to transfer reports.
The French central defender, 27, has been a free agent since the end of his stint with RC Lens and had been linked with a move to Olympique de Marseille. But prominent transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says Sarr has now given his approval to join Neom, a rapidly emerging club in Saudi Arabia.
The development appears to end Marseille’s hopes of bringing the former Chelsea and Nice defender to the Stade Velodrome, despite recent efforts by the Ligue 1 club to explore a deal.
Marseille interest fades
Sarr’s future had been the subject of growing speculation in France after his contract with Lens came to an end.
For a time, he was reported to be on Marseille’s shortlist as the club assesses options to strengthen its defence ahead of the new campaign. Club officials at OM recently made contact with the player’s representatives to assess whether a move was realistic, and what financial and sporting conditions would be required.
Those discussions, however, now look to have come too late.
With Romano reporting that Sarr has reached an agreement with Neom, the route to a high-profile move to Marseille appears to have been closed off, at least for this transfer window.

Sarr’s decision underlines the continued pull of Middle Eastern football for European-based players in their prime.
By opting for Neom, he is set to swap the intensity and visibility of Ligue 1 for a growing league that has been investing heavily in infrastructure, playing staff and international profile.
At 27, the centre-back is entering what are typically considered peak years for a defender. A move to Saudi Arabia offers him the prospect of regular first-team football and a central role in a club project keen to raise its standards and reputation.
