France captain Kylian Mbappé has spoken of his heartbreak after Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup final were ended by a 2-0 defeat to Spain in Dallas.
The semi-final loss brought France’s campaign to an end, denying Didier Deschamps‘ side the opportunity to compete for a second World Cup title in eight years after lifting the trophy in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2022.
Mbappé shares disappointment
Speaking after the final whistle, the Real Madrid forward admitted the defeat was painful for both the players and the French public.
“Like everyone else, I’m very disappointed. It was a dream for us to reach the final, to give our country this opportunity to continue dreaming and to make history. Now, it’s something we have to face with our heads held high.”
Mbappé’s comments reflected the mood in the French camp after Spain secured their place in Sunday’s World Cup final.
‘We have to move on’
Although devastated by the result, the France captain stressed the importance of learning from the setback and focusing on the future.
“I don’t think I can quite put into words how disappointed the team and I are. But like any top-level player, even if it sounds a bit robotic, we’ll have to pick ourselves up, go on vacation, and move on. Because football doesn’t wait for anyone, we’ll have to learn and start again to put this failure behind us.”
France had entered the tournament among the favourites but fell one match short of another World Cup final appearance.
One final match to play
Despite missing out on the showpiece final, France still have the opportunity to end their campaign on a positive note.
Les Bleus will face the loser of the second semi-final between Argentina and England in Saturday’s third-place play-off.
While the disappointment of their semi-final exit remains fresh, Mbappé insisted the team must respond positively, learn from the experience and begin preparing for the challenges ahead.
