Kaizer Chiefs dressing-room questions grow after Red Arrows defeat

A short video showing Kaizer Chiefs players Reeve Frosler and Renaldo Leaner involved in a heated exchange after their 1-0 defeat by Red Arrows in Zambia has prompted debate among supporters.

Amakhosi lost the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie to a late goal, leaving them needing to overturn the deficit in next weekend’s return leg in South Africa.

The result has put pressure on Kaizer Chiefs to respond quickly if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the group stages alive. The match was not televised, but footage shared on social media has provided a glimpse of events after the final whistle.

One clip, lasting less than 20 seconds, appears to show right-back Frosler pointing a finger at goalkeeper Leaner. A team-mate then leads Frosler away, while Leaner also appears to exchange words with the defender before Bruce Bvuma intervenes to calm the situation.

The video does not make clear what led to the disagreement, but it has raised wider questions among Kaizer Chiefs supporters about the mood and leadership within the squad.

Supporter @Mpillow suggested the incident could be evidence of deeper problems at the club.

“Problems at Kaizer Chiefs are much deeper than we think. Abo Frosler wants to issue hands on our new signings instead of encouraging them. Looks like that dressing room is a mess; something has to be done ASAP before we find ourselves in NFD. Sorry Leaner bro,” the fan wrote.

Another supporter, @Vhakhonimajor, called for Frosler to face disciplinary action.

“If Kaizer Motaung Jnr is fair, Frosler must follow Cele immediately. We don’t need such players, especially during this period,” the supporter commented.

The debate also extended to the coaching staff and the club’s wider leadership. Supporter @kamva____20 argued that the team’s difficulties could not be placed solely on the players.

“The dressing room is messed up; we have a puppet, not a coach. We play kaak under coaches who don’t know English; we were better last season under those translators who know English and tactics,” the fan wrote.

Kaizer Chiefs now face the task of recovering from the narrow loss when Red Arrows visit South Africa for the second leg next weekend. They must win that match to keep their continental campaign alive.

The exchange between Frosler and Leaner has added to the frustration surrounding the defeat, although the brief footage does not establish the cause of the incident or indicate whether it reflects wider problems within the squad.
