Isaac Schmidt: Switzerland-Nigeria left-back joins Young Boys from Leeds

Switzerland-Nigeria defender Isaac Schmidt has joined Young Boys from Leeds United, signing a long-term deal with the Swiss champions until 30 June 2030. The 26-year-old left-back returns to the Super League after a season in England and a loan spell in Germany.

Schmidt moves back to his home country having most recently been on the books at Leeds, where he arrived from St Gallen in August 2024. During his time with the Yorkshire club he spent much of last season in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen, joining the German side on loan in August 2025 before returning to England at the end of the campaign.

Born in Lausanne and standing at 1.72m, Schmidt is a right-footed left-back who has already accumulated significant experience in Swiss football. Across his time with Lausanne-Sport and St Gallen he made close to 100 appearances in the Super League, contributing goals and assists from defence.

At domestic level he has twice celebrated promotion honours, lifting the Swiss second-tier title with Lausanne-Sport in 2019-20 and adding the English Championship title with Leeds in 2024-25. He also has experience in European competition, scoring and assisting in UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying ties earlier in his career.

Schmidt’s contract with Young Boys runs to the summer of 2030, confirming his return to Swiss football on a long-term basis.
