Hassan Shehata sends strong World Cup warning to Egypt stars

Egyptian football icon Hassan Shehata has delivered a powerful message to the Egypt national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging players to approach the tournament with courage and belief.

Speaking in a radio interview, the former head coach made it clear that fear has no place on football’s biggest stage.

“Whoever is afraid will not complete their journey in the tournament,” Shehata warned, calling on the squad to show bravery and character when they step onto the world stage.

“Play seriously and with identity”

Shehata emphasised that success at the World Cup will depend not just on talent, but on mentality and structure. He insisted the team must play with seriousness and develop a clear identity if they are to compete at the highest level.

“The Egyptian national team must play seriously,” he said, adding that doing so would naturally lead to strong performances.

According to the legendary coach, having a defined style of play and a strong collective personality will be key factors in achieving positive results during the tournament.

Lessons from Brazil clash

Reflecting on his own experience, Shehata recalled Egypt’s memorable clash with Brazil national football team during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup; a match that remains one of the Pharaohs’ most iconic performances despite ending in defeat.

He revealed how he addressed his players at halftime, urging them to shed their fear and play with confidence.

The response, he noted, was immediate, with Egypt delivering an outstanding second-half display before eventually losing to a late penalty.

The anecdote served as a clear message to the current generation: confidence can transform performances, even against the world’s best.

Advice for Mohamed Salah

Shehata also had specific words for Mohamed Salah, the team’s talisman and one of Africa’s biggest stars.

The former coach encouraged Salah to replicate his approach at Liverpool FC when playing for the national team, insisting that doing so would only benefit Egypt.

He stressed that Salah’s natural game marked by confidence, directness, and attacking intent should not be altered, as it remains a crucial asset for the Pharaohs.

A call for belief

As Egypt prepares for the World Cup, Shehata’s message is both simple and emphatic: play without fear, stay disciplined, and trust in your identity.

With expectations rising and the global spotlight approaching, the Pharaohs will be hoping to channel that mindset into a campaign capable of making a lasting impact.
