Ghana handed Nigeria test in WAFU B U-20 draw

The Black Satellites of Ghana  have been drawn alongside regional rivals Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso in Group B of the WAFU B U-20 Championship, as they begin their bid to qualify for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The draw for the regional competition was conducted on Wednesday at the headquarters of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The tournament will determine which teams from the region secure places at the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana is set to host.

The draw places the Black Satellites in what is expected to be one of the competition’s most competitive groups, with all four teams aiming to progress to the continental tournament.

One of the standout fixtures will see Ghana renew its long-standing football rivalry with Nigeria. The neighbouring nations are expected to compete directly for one of the available qualification places, adding another chapter to one of African football’s most established rivalries.

In addition to Nigeria, Ghana will also face Togo and Burkina Faso during the group stage as they seek to book their place at the continental championship.

The Black Satellites will need strong performances throughout the tournament if they are to emerge from a group featuring three fellow West African opponents with the same ambition of reaching the Africa Cup of Nations.

Group A features hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Benin and Niger. Those three nations will likewise compete for qualification to the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations through the regional championship.

The WAFU B U-20 Championship will bring together all seven member associations of WAFU Zone B, with the competition serving a dual purpose. Alongside crowning the region’s youth champions, it will also act as the qualifying tournament for the next CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The event is expected to showcase many of West Africa’s emerging footballers, providing young players with an opportunity to compete at regional level while pursuing qualification for the continental competition.

For Ghana, the stakes are heightened by the prospect of hosting the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Securing qualification through the WAFU B tournament would ensure the Black Satellites earn their place at a competition that will be staged on home soil.

However, the path to the continental finals will be far from straightforward. Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso will each be aiming to advance from Group B, making every match significant in the race for qualification.

The draw has therefore set the stage for an eagerly anticipated regional tournament, with the meeting between Ghana and Nigeria likely to attract particular attention given the history between the two footballing nations.

As the seven WAFU Zone B member associations prepare for the competition, the championship will provide an important platform for the region’s brightest young talents while determining which teams will go on to compete at the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
