Ghana defender Yegbe suffers relegation with Metz

French side FC Metz have been relegated from Ligue 1 after finishing bottom of the table at the end of the 2025/26 season, with Ghanaian defender Terry Yegbe unable to help the club avoid the drop despite a determined final-day effort.

Metz concluded their campaign with a goalless draw away to OGC Nice at the Allianz Riviera, but the point proved insufficient to preserve their place in France’s top division. Yegbe played the entire match as Metz sought a crucial result to boost their survival hopes.

The Maroons ended the season rooted to the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings with only 17 points after a difficult and disappointing campaign. Their struggles throughout the season left them unable to compete consistently, with the club recording just three victories from their 34 league matches.

In addition to those three wins, Metz managed eight draws while suffering 23 defeats, a run of results that ultimately condemned them to relegation. The team’s inability to turn performances into positive outcomes proved costly over the course of the season.

Although Metz endured a difficult year collectively, Yegbe remained a regular figure in the side’s defence. The Ghanaian centre-back made 24 appearances during the campaign and contributed one assist.

The 25-year-old defender has continued to build his profile despite the club’s struggles and remains part of Ghana’s national team plans. Yegbe made his debut for the Ghana national football team in November 2024 during the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in a match against Niger.

His involvement with the Black Stars marked an important step in his international career, although he has so far made only one appearance for the national side.

With Metz now preparing for life in Ligue 2, Yegbe is expected to focus on helping the club secure an immediate return to the top flight. The defender will also be aiming to maintain his place in Ghana’s national team setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The relegation marks a disappointing end to the season for Metz, whose campaign was characterised by inconsistent performances and a lack of results. Despite managing to avoid defeat in their final fixture against Nice, the club’s fate had effectively been shaped by a prolonged struggle across the season.

For Yegbe, however, the coming months may provide an opportunity to rebuild both at club level and internationally. A strong showing in Ligue 2 could strengthen his hopes of becoming a more established member of Ghana’s squad as preparations continue for future international competitions.
