Ghana boss Queiroz confident after tactical gains against Croatia

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz believes his side’s defeat by Croatia has provided valuable experience that could prove crucial as the Black Stars prepare for the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup.

Although Ghana were beaten 2-1 in Philadelphia on Saturday, the result was enough to see them progress to the Round of 32, where they will face Colombia for a place in the last 16.

Rather than focusing on the disappointment of the defeat, Queiroz highlighted the knowledge his team gained from the performance, insisting the match represented another important step in the squad’s development under his leadership.

“I learned a lot in this game,” he said.

“The best thing about this game is what we learned. We learned a lot in terms of our evolution and our progress.”

The Portuguese coach believes the encounter provided valuable insight into both his players and the tactical options available to him as Ghana continue their World Cup campaign.

“We have a clear picture about the performance of some players and what we can do differently in the next games.”

Queiroz made a significant tactical adjustment during the interval, changing Ghana’s formation to a 4-4-2 system for the second half. The alteration helped produce a much-improved display from the Black Stars, who created more attacking opportunities and eventually found an equaliser through Derrick Luckassen.

Reflecting on the tactical experiment, Queiroz said it was the first occasion his side had deployed the system in a competitive match.

“It was the first time in 45 minutes that we played 4-4-2 with two forwards. We didn’t have much time to work on it, but the players did well.”

The former Real Madrid coach believes the formation has the potential to become an even more effective option as the players gain greater understanding and familiarity with their roles.

“With a couple of adjustments, we can be even better, as we showed in the second half.”

While the defeat ended Ghana’s group-stage campaign on a losing note, Queiroz insisted the team’s focus has already shifted to the challenges that lie ahead rather than dwelling on the outcome in Philadelphia.

He reminded his players that qualification for the knockout rounds marks the beginning of a different phase of the tournament, where every match will determine whether they continue their campaign.

“We win, or we learn. Today we learned.”

“The real World Cup starts in the next game.”

Ghana will now turn their attention to their Round of 32 meeting with Colombia, knowing victory would secure a place in the last 16.

Queiroz believes the lessons learned against Croatia, together with the tactical progress shown during the second half, have given his side a stronger platform as they prepare for one of their biggest matches of the tournament.

With a clearer understanding of his squad, fresh tactical options to consider and knockout football now beginning, the Ghana coach is confident his team can build on the positives from the Croatia defeat as they seek to extend their World Cup journey.
