A German refereeing team led by Daniel Schlager has been appointed to oversee the upcoming Egyptian Premier League match between Al Ahly and Pyramids FC, following a formal request from Al Ahly for foreign officials.
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed the decision after the club asked for an international refereeing crew to handle the fixture, offering to cover the associated costs. These expenses will be deducted from outstanding dues linked to Al Ahly’s participation in the Egyptian Super Cup.
The match is scheduled for Monday evening at Cairo International Stadium and forms part of the fourth round of the league’s final stage, where teams compete for the title.
Experienced Team Selected
The refereeing committee, led by Oscar Ruiz, has assembled a full German officiating team for the encounter. Schlager will be assisted by Sven Waszitzky Günter and Tobias Fritsch, with Martin Petersen serving as the fourth official. Video Assistant Referee duties will be handled by Baskar Müller, supported by Kathrin Rafalski.
Schlager, 37, brings significant experience from German domestic competitions. According to statistics from Transfermarkt, he has officiated 24 matches this season, including 13 in the Bundesliga and four in the second division.
A Reputation for Strict Discipline
The German referee has developed a reputation for firm decision-making. Across his matches this season, he has issued nine red cards—four directly and five following second yellow cards. In addition, he has shown 109 yellow cards and awarded five penalties.
One notable match, involving Cologne and Hamburg, saw him issue two red cards, underlining his readiness to enforce disciplinary measures when required. His approach suggests a low tolerance for fouls and misconduct, making him one of the more assertive referees currently active in European football.
Career Progression
Born in Rastatt, Germany, Schlager began his professional refereeing journey in the German third division. He made his Bundesliga debut in 2018 in a match between Nuremberg and Werder Bremen, marking a significant milestone in his career.
His steady rise through the ranks culminated in him receiving the international referee badge in 2022, further solidifying his standing within global football officiating circles.
Familiarity with Cairo Fixture
This will not be Schlager’s first involvement in a match between Al Ahly and Pyramids. During the 2023–2024 season, he served as the fourth official in a league meeting between the two sides. That match, played in the 31st round, ended in a 1–0 victory for Al Ahly.
High Stakes Anticipated
With the title race intensifying, the appointment of a foreign referee underscores the significance of the fixture. Schlager’s track record suggests that discipline will play a central role in the outcome, with both teams expected to adapt to a strict interpretation of the rules.
As Al Ahly and Pyramids prepare for a decisive encounter, attention will not only be on the players but also on the man in the middle, whose decisions could prove pivotal in shaping the result.
