FIFA has confirmed the suspension of Egypt midfielder Mohanad Lasheen for the Pharaohs’ crucial Round of 32 encounter against Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Egypt are preparing for a high-stakes knockout clash at Arlington Stadium in Texas as they look to continue their impressive campaign and secure a place in the Round of 16. However, they will now have to do so without one of their most influential midfielders.
Lasheen has been a key figure for Hossam Hassan’s side throughout the group stage, providing balance, defensive stability and composure in midfield.
FIFA included the midfielder in its official list of suspended players for Friday’s World Cup fixtures after he accumulated two yellow cards during the group stage.
Under tournament regulations, yellow cards are wiped after the group phase only if a player has not received a second caution across the three matches.
Lasheen’s suspension was triggered after he was booked in the second minute of stoppage time during Egypt’s final Group G match against Iran. He had previously been cautioned in the opening group-stage fixture against New Zealand.
The Egyptian Football Association reportedly sought to challenge the booking issued against Lasheen during the Iran match, arguing that the decision was debatable.
However, FIFA upheld the referee’s decision, confirming the suspension and ruling the midfielder out of the knockout tie against Australia.
His absence is expected to be a significant setback for Egypt, given the important role he has played in the team’s disciplined performances throughout the tournament.
The Pharaohs could also be without left-back Ahmed Fatouh, who remains a doubt because of injury, further complicating Hossam Hassan’s selection plans ahead of the decisive encounter.
Despite the setbacks, Egypt remain determined to extend their World Cup journey after progressing from the group stage through a series of organised and resilient displays.
The Round of 32 clash between Egypt and Australia will be played on Friday at Arlington Stadium, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
