FIFA and FECOFOOT align on roadmap for Congo football future

The Congo Federation (FECOFOOT) has received a significant boost after holding high-level talks with FIFA aimed at strengthening the future of football governance in the country.

The virtual meeting, held on Friday, 3 April 2026, brought together members of FECOFOOT’s Executive Committee and senior FIFA officials in what has been described as a key moment for Congolese football.

The session forms part of ongoing efforts to align the federation’s development plans with international standards while addressing internal administrative and sporting challenges.

Leading the FIFA delegation was Harraz Ahmed, Head of FIFA Governance Services, alongside four experts drawn from various international committees.

Their involvement underlined the importance FIFA attaches to the current situation in Congo and its willingness to play an active role in supporting reforms.

Discussions during the meeting centred on a detailed evaluation of FECOFOOT’s current structure and operations. Both sides reviewed the federation’s progress, as well as areas requiring further improvement, particularly in governance and organisational stability.

Following the deliberations, FIFA representatives expressed clear support for the current leadership of FECOFOOT.

The Executive Committee was encouraged to continue its work, with the global body signalling confidence in the direction being taken despite the challenges facing the federation.

This backing is seen as a crucial endorsement at a time when the federation is preparing for upcoming elections.

With leadership transitions often presenting periods of uncertainty, FIFA’s position is expected to reinforce stability and provide assurance to stakeholders within Congolese football.

The meeting also highlighted a shared commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of the federation in the lead-up to the next General Assembly.

FIFA reiterated its readiness to assist FECOFOOT in maintaining institutional balance and supporting reforms designed to strengthen the organisation.

For many observers, the outcome of the discussions represents more than just administrative dialogue.

It reflects a broader attempt to restore confidence in the governance of football in Congo and to lay the groundwork for sustainable development both on and off the pitch.

The atmosphere at the conclusion of the session was described as constructive and cooperative, with both parties expressing optimism about the road ahead.

The sense of mutual trust established during the talks is expected to play a key role as FECOFOOT navigates the next phase of its evolution.

With FIFA’s backing secured, attention will now turn to how effectively the federation can implement its plans and deliver stability in the months leading up to its elections.

For Congolese football, the stakes remain high, but the latest developments suggest a more coordinated and supported path forward.
