Asamoah Gyan backs Ghana to impress at 2026 World Cup

Asamoah Gyan says Ghana national football team possess the talent required to perform strongly at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he has raised concerns about the squad’s level of experience ahead of the tournament.

The former Ghana captain made the comments as the Black Stars continue preparations for the competition, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana are preparing for their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside the England national football team, the Croatia national football team and the Panama national football team.

Speaking to 3Sports, Gyan expressed optimism about the team’s prospects despite acknowledging concerns over the relative inexperience of the current squad.

“We have the tools. We have young players coming up. The experience is a bit dicey. As somebody who has been in the game, we will do everything, we will give our support,” he said.

Gyan, who now serves as Brand Ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and Colts football, believes the blend of emerging players and established internationals could help the Black Stars compete effectively at the tournament.

The national team is currently holding a training camp in Cardiff ahead of an international friendly against the Wales national football team next month.

Thirteen players took part in training sessions at Dragon Park on Monday, including Ernest Nuamah, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Jordan Ayew, Caleb Yirenkyi and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

Also involved were Elisha Owusu, Gideon Mensah, Marvin Senaya, Jerome Opoku, Benjamin Asare, Joseph Anang, Solomon Agbasi and Alidu Seidu.

The remainder of the players included in the provisional 28-man squad are expected to arrive in camp on Tuesday as preparations continue.

Ghana will use the friendly against Wales as part of their final build-up before travelling to North America for the World Cup.

The Black Stars are scheduled to open their Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field on 17 June before facing England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June.

Their final group-stage match will come against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on 27 June.

Ghana are seeking an improved performance after suffering group-stage eliminations at both the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The Black Stars have not progressed beyond the first round of the competition in more than a decade and will hope the upcoming campaign marks a return to the knockout stage.

For Gyan, one of the country’s most celebrated footballers, the focus now is on backing the new generation as Ghana prepare for another appearance on football’s biggest stage.
