Ghana international Gideon Mensah is close to joining Bundesliga side FC Köln after becoming a free agent following the expiry of his contract with French club AJ Auxerre.
The left-back is set for a move to Germany after his deal with Auxerre ended on 30 June 2026, with FC Köln expected to add the defender’s experience to their squad ahead of the new Bundesliga season.
Mensah arrives on the back of an impressive international campaign, having started every match for Ghana during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The 27-year-old established himself as a key member of the Black Stars‘ defence throughout the tournament, producing consistent performances at left-back in each of the team’s fixtures.
His displays on the international stage have come after several seasons in French football, where he became an established figure for Auxerre.
During his time with the Ligue 1 club, Mensah made more than 100 appearances, developing into one of the team’s experienced defenders before leaving at the end of his contract.
FC Köln are expected to benefit from the experience he gained in France as they prepare for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
A move to Germany would represent the latest chapter in a career that has taken Mensah through several European leagues following his emergence in Ghana.
The defender began his football career with WAFA before making the move to Europe to join the Red Bull Salzburg system.
Although contracted to the Austrian club, Mensah gained experience through a series of loan spells across the continent.
He spent time with Sturm Graz, Zulte Waregem, Vitória Guimarães and Bordeaux, building experience in different leagues before securing a permanent transfer to Auxerre in 2022.
His move to the French club proved to be an important step in his career, allowing him to establish himself over several seasons and surpass the milestone of 100 appearances.
Alongside his club achievements, Mensah has become a regular member of Ghana’s national team.
He has earned nearly 40 caps for the Black Stars and further strengthened his international reputation by starting all of Ghana’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His consistent performances during the tournament underlined his importance to the national side and reinforced his credentials ahead of a possible move to Germany.
With his contract at Auxerre now complete, the defender is available as a free agent, placing FC Köln in a strong position to secure his signature without paying a transfer fee.
Should the move be finalised, Mensah would bring significant experience from both international football and the French top flight to the Bundesliga club.
The proposed transfer would also mark another milestone in a career that has progressed from Ghana through Austria, Belgium, Portugal and France, with Germany now appearing to be the defender’s next destination.
After years of building experience across Europe and cementing his place in the Black Stars squad, Mensah is now on the verge of beginning a new challenge with FC Köln as they prepare for the 2026-27 Bundesliga season.
