Fabregas praises Como’s win but warns there is no such thing as ‘perfect tactics’

Cesc Fabregas praised Como’s response to earlier defensive problems after they beat Fiorentina 3-1 in Serie A, while accepting that his team’s attacking approach will always carry an element of risk.

Como secured the victory at the Stadio Franchi on Sunday afternoon through goals from Mattia Liberali, Nico Paz and Tasos Douvikas. The result moved them up to fourth in the Serie A standings, with several matches still to play before the end of Week 7.

Fabregas said his side had addressed some of the weaknesses exposed in previous matches, particularly their vulnerability to passes played behind the defence.

“We suffered from balls in behind the defence against Frosinone, but it’s not just us who have had that,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“We suffered less in terms of depth today, we played a very complete game. There are risks when you play the way we do. There’s no such thing as perfect tactics: Spain, Barcelona, PSG, Bayern, everyone tinkers to their opponents and might still concede.”

The Como manager was also asked about Trevoh Chalobah, who was substituted early in the first half after appearing to pick up an injury.

“I think Chalobah came off in time, but Diao said the same thing, so we’ll see tomorrow,” Fabregas said.

Fabregas made a further tactical adjustment late in the match by moving Lucas Da Cunha into a more advanced midfield position. He was asked whether that was an approach he intended to use regularly during the season.

The Spaniard said the decision had been shaped by Fiorentina’s difficulties when they did not have possession, as well as the different qualities within his squad.

“In the end, it’s the attitude towards the game that counts, despite the difference in characteristics we have with our players,” he said.

“At the moment, Fiorentina are suffering without the ball, so we wanted to keep it and I chose to keep him, Caqueret, Milla and Perrone together.”
