Former Ghana international Michael Essien has backed the Black Stars to progress beyond the group stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing belief that the current squad has the ability to deliver a stronger campaign than in recent tournaments.
Ghana, four-time African champions, will compete at the global finals hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. They have been drawn in Group L, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama in what is expected to be one of the more competitive groups at the tournament.
The Black Stars are aiming to improve on their recent World Cup performances, having exited at the group stage in both the 2014 edition in Brazil and the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Those disappointments have increased expectations that the team will show progress this time around.
Essien, speaking to talkSPORTS, believes Ghana have the quality needed to advance further in 2026, while acknowledging the pressure that comes with national expectations.
“I think the team has teh quality to make it out of the group phase. They were disappointing in the last World Cup in Qatar, and as a Ghanaian, the nation is also expecting the boys to do well,” the former Chelsea midfielder told talkSPORTS.
He pointed to Ghana’s fixture against England as one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage, highlighting the level of attention such a clash will attract from fans around the world. However, he stressed the importance of maintaining focus throughout the tournament rather than being distracted by individual high-profile encounters.
“Ghana playing against England is a game everyone is looking up to, so let’s see what they can do, but they will have to take it game by game and make sure they win.”
Essien added that, in his view, reaching the knockout stage should be regarded as the minimum objective for the Black Stars, with any further progress considered an additional success for supporters.
“If they can make it out of the group stage and then go to the next stage, and if something happens, I am sure the nation will be happy, but I have high hopes for the team to perform, he said.
Ghana’s World Cup campaign is scheduled to begin on 17 June at BMO Field against Panama. They will then face England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June in a highly anticipated encounter before concluding their Group L fixtures against Croatia on 27 June.
The team is currently based in the United States as part of their preparations for the tournament. Their build-up will include a final pre-World Cup friendly against Jamaica on 10 June, which is expected to serve as their last major test before the competition begins.
With expectations rising and a challenging group ahead, Essien’s comments add to the growing optimism surrounding the Black Stars as they prepare to compete on football’s biggest stage once again.
