DR Congo fan ‘Lumumba Vea’ to miss World Cup playoff over visa issues

DR Congo will be without one of its most recognisable supporters ‘Lumumba Vea’ when the national team faces Jamaica in a decisive 2026 World Cup play-off in Mexico.

Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, widely known as “Lumumba Vea”, has been unable to travel due to visa complications, despite making several attempts to join the team for the crucial fixture.

His absence is a disappointment for many fans, as he had become a symbol of support for the Leopards during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mboladinga rose to prominence at the tournament in Morocco, where his unique style of support captured attention across the continent and beyond. Dressed in a suit and glasses, he embodied the image of Congo’s independence leader Patrice Lumumba, standing motionless for entire matches in a pose that resembled a monument.

His silent and disciplined presence in the stands quickly went viral, turning him into one of the most talked-about supporters of the competition. For many Congolese fans, his performances represented both creativity and a deep sense of national pride.

However, despite his desire to be present for the World Cup play-off, administrative hurdles have prevented him from making the journey. Reports indicate that he travelled to Kenya in a final attempt to secure the necessary documentation, but was unsuccessful.

Alternative travel arrangements were considered, but delays in processing and the distances involved have made it impossible for him to arrive in time for the match. As a result, he will now watch from Kinshasa as DR Congo seeks to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.

The Leopards face Jamaica in what is a high-stakes encounter, with qualification for the global tournament hanging in the balance.

For supporters, both at home and in the diaspora, the match represents a significant opportunity for the nation to return to football’s biggest stage.

Mboladinga’s absence highlights the challenges faced by African supporters when travelling across continents for major sporting events. Despite the setback, his connection to the team remains strong.

During the Africa Cup of Nations, he maintained his character throughout each match, only breaking his silence and stillness after DR Congo’s elimination from the tournament. On that occasion, he was seen in tears, a moment that resonated deeply with fans and reflected his emotional investment in the team.

Although he will not be present in Mexico, many supporters believe his spirit will still be felt as the Leopards take to the field.

As DR Congo prepares for one of its most important matches in recent history, the absence of “Lumumba Vea” serves as a reminder of the passion that surrounds African football—where even the fans can become symbols of national identity and inspiration.
