Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given has praised Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze following Fulham’s 0-0 draw against Brentford on Saturday, highlighting the attacker’s ability to bring energy and attacking intent to the side.
Chukwueze, who is currently on loan at Fulham from AC Milan, was introduced before half-time after compatriot Alex Iwobi was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury. His arrival was seen as an attempt to inject urgency into a match that had largely lacked attacking quality in the opening period.
Speaking during coverage on Premier League Productions, Given singled out Chukwueze’s attacking instincts and suggested he could play a key role in lifting the tempo of the game.
“Chukwueze has entered the game. I like him as well; he is a genuinely attacking player. You can expect to see similar link-up play in the second half,” Given remarked.
The former goalkeeper also reflected on the overall lack of excitement in the first half, noting missed opportunities and a general absence of cutting edge from both sides.
“At the very least, a bit of excitement is needed because the first half has been quite lackluster. Keane Lewis-Potter had a significant opportunity just before half-time to give Brentford the advantage but failed to capitalize on it,” he added.
Despite the introduction of Chukwueze and hopes of a more dynamic second-half display, Fulham were unable to break the deadlock. The match ended goalless, denying the London club a chance to recover from their previous defeat to Liverpool.
While the result offered little in terms of goals, Chukwueze’s continued involvement has drawn attention since his move to Craven Cottage. The Nigerian international has contributed three goals and four assists in 19 league appearances, figures that underline his growing influence within the squad.
His performances during the loan spell have not gone unnoticed, with reports suggesting Fulham are now considering making the move permanent at the end of the season. The club’s interest reflects confidence in his ability to add creativity and attacking threat over the long term.
Saturday’s draw may not have delivered the result Fulham were seeking, but the focus on Chukwueze’s contribution points to a player increasingly seen as central to their ambitions.
