DR Congo international Chancel Mbemba, currently a free agent after leaving Lille, is in line for a surprise switch to Brazilian side Botafogo with talks understood to be under way over a move to Serie A in Brazil.
Mbemba, 31, is available without a transfer fee after his contract with Lille ended at the start of July, a situation that has alerted Botafogo as they look to add an experienced centre-back before the business end of the campaign. The defender’s current market valuation stands at around €2 million, but any agreement would focus on personal terms and contract length rather than a transfer fee.
The Kinshasa-born centre-back has built a substantial career in European football, including spells in the Premier League with Newcastle United, in Portugal with Porto and in France with Marseille and Lille. He has featured 31 times in the Champions League, scoring five goals, and won the Portuguese title with Porto in 2021-22, when he was also named Defender of the Year in Liga Portugal.
Mbemba has just come off an important international summer, starting every game for DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup and registering one assist while playing all available minutes. That sustained exposure on the global stage is thought to have reinforced interest from clubs seeking an immediate defensive organiser.
With Mbemba unattached and free to sign outside standard transfer windows, Botafogo are exploring the terms of a deal, while the player weighs up his next move after more than a decade in European football.
