Borussia Dortmund target Folarin Balogun as potential Serhou Guirassy replacement

Borussia Dortmund have identified Folarin Balogun as a potential attacking reinforcement this summer, with the Bundesliga club considering the Monaco striker as a replacement should Serhou Guirassy leave the club.

The German side are understood to be preparing for multiple transfer scenarios amid growing speculation surrounding Guirassy’s future, prompting the club to draw up a shortlist of possible successors.

Balogun on Dortmund’s radar

Balogun has enhanced his reputation with a series of impressive performances for Monaco and the United States national team, including a strong FIFA World Cup campaign that has attracted further interest from across Europe.

The 24-year-old joined Monaco from Arsenal on 30 August 2023 on a five-year contract in a deal worth an initial €30 million, with performance-related bonuses capable of increasing the total package to €40 million.

His move to Ligue 1 followed a breakthrough loan spell at Reims during the 2022-23 season, where he scored 21 goals in 37 league appearances to establish himself as one of France’s most promising young strikers.

Why Dortmund are interested

Dortmund view Balogun as a forward whose pace, movement and versatility would fit their attacking style.

The American international is capable of stretching defensive lines, making intelligent runs behind opposition back fours and finishing from a variety of positions inside the penalty area.

While the Bundesliga club continue to assess several attacking options, Balogun’s profile makes him one of the leading candidates should Guirassy depart during the current transfer window.

Monaco remain in control

Despite the growing interest, Monaco remain under no immediate pressure to sell.

Balogun is under a long-term contract, giving the French club a strong negotiating position should Dortmund or any other interested side decide to formalise their interest.

For now, Dortmund are continuing to monitor the situation while waiting for greater clarity over Guirassy’s future before making any significant move in the transfer market.

The interest from one of Germany’s biggest clubs is the latest indication that Balogun’s reputation continues to grow following another productive season at club level and an eye-catching World Cup campaign.
