Kaizer Chiefs target R6.6m boost in CAF Confederation Cup tie

Kaizer Chiefs have the chance to secure a minimum prize of approximately R6.6 million when they begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign against Red Arrows later this month.

The South African club were drawn against the Zambian side in the second qualifying round, with the winner of the two-legged tie progressing to the competition’s group stage.

Red Arrows will host the first leg at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday, 17 October. Kaizer Chiefs will then have home advantage in the return fixture, which will be played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, 23 October. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00.

Advancing to the group stage would guarantee a minimum prize of USD400,000, equivalent to approximately R6.6 million. The financial incentive gives added importance to a tie which will also determine whether Amakhosi remain in contention for continental silverware this season.

Kaizer Chiefs’ return to the CAF Confederation Cup follows their elimination from the MTN8. The club therefore have another opportunity to compete for a trophy while also pursuing a significant financial reward.

Amakhosi reached the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup last season and appeared well placed to qualify for the quarter-finals after building a strong position during the later stages of the group campaign.

Their progress ended in the final group match, however, when they were beaten by Egyptian giants Zamalek.

Chiefs must now negotiate the qualifying rounds if they are to reach the group stage again. The first meeting with Red Arrows will take place in Zambia before the decisive return leg in South Africa.

The club will also have another chance to compete for prize money later this year when they take part in the Carling Knockout Cup. With the CAF Confederation Cup and Carling Knockout Cup still ahead, Kaizer Chiefs have further opportunities to challenge for honours and generate revenue.
