Bellingham defends England display after Tuchel criticism

Jude Bellingham has defended England’s performance after their difficult 2-1 victory over Norway in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals, insisting the team showed the character needed to overcome a challenging opponent.

England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted he was unhappy with his side’s display despite securing a place in the semi-finals, saying his players had made the match harder than necessary.

The Three Lions advanced to the final four after Bellingham scored a decisive brace to complete the comeback win, but Tuchel felt the performance did not match the standards required for a team aiming to reach the World Cup final.

Bellingham, however, offered a different perspective after the match, pointing to the quality of the Norway squad and the difficulty of the challenge England faced.

“He might not know what it’s like to face Haaland, Ødegaard, Nusa and Sørloth. This is not an easy team to play against,” Bellingham said.

The Real Madrid midfielder’s two goals proved crucial as England overturned Norway’s advantage and secured their place in the semi-finals.

While Tuchel focused on areas where England could improve, Bellingham highlighted the importance of being able to win matches in difficult circumstances.

The midfielder said success at major tournaments is not always achieved through dominant performances and that teams must develop the ability to handle pressure.

“We’re trying to build a strong group. We’re not going to win every match by dominating. Sometimes you have to know how to win when things get tough,” Bellingham said.

The victory continued England’s run in the tournament and moved them closer to a possible place in the World Cup final.

The Three Lions will now face Argentina in the semi-finals on Tuesday, with a place in the final at stake.

For Tuchel, the challenge will be ensuring England improve their performance levels before facing one of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Despite reaching the last four, the England manager’s comments showed his belief that qualification alone was not enough and that his players must continue to improve.

Bellingham’s response reflected the confidence within the squad, with the midfielder emphasising the importance of teamwork and resilience during the biggest moments.

The 2026 World Cup has seen Bellingham become one of England’s most influential players, and his contribution against Norway once again demonstrated his ability to deliver in crucial matches.

His two goals secured progression, but his message after the game focused on the wider strength of the squad and their ability to overcome adversity.

As England prepare for their semi-final meeting with Argentina, the team will look to combine the fighting spirit praised by Bellingham with the improved performances demanded by Tuchel.

The result against Norway has kept England’s World Cup dream alive, but their next challenge will test whether they can turn resilience into another victory on the biggest stage.
