Turkish giants Fenerbahçe are considering another move for Nigeria international Ademola Lookman, with the forward once again emerging as a potential target for the Istanbul club.
Fenerbahçe had previously attempted to sign Lookman during the last transfer window when he was still playing for Italian side Atalanta, but the negotiations failed to reach an agreement.
The Nigerian attacker later completed a move to Atlético Madrid, ending Fenerbahçe’s hopes of bringing him to Turkey at that stage.
However, reports suggest Lookman’s name has returned to the club’s plans as Fenerbahçe continue to assess options for strengthening their attack ahead of the new season.
The Turkish side could make the 28-year-old a priority target if Kerem Aktürkoğlu departs the club for Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ahli.
Al Ahli are reportedly preparing an offer worth €35 million for Aktürkoğlu, and a possible departure could create the need for Fenerbahçe to bring in another attacking player.
Lookman is viewed as a player who matches the qualities the club is searching for, with his speed, ability to take on defenders and finishing ability making him an attractive option.
The Nigerian forward has built a reputation as a dangerous attacking player capable of changing games through his individual ability.
Those qualities have placed him back on Fenerbahçe’s radar as the club looks to improve its attacking options.
The Istanbul side are now considering whether to make another attempt to convince Lookman to continue his career in Turkey.
Their previous pursuit of the player ended without success, but the current situation could provide a fresh opportunity to reopen discussions.
Fenerbahçe’s interest in Lookman comes as the club prepares for potential changes within its attacking department.
Should Aktürkoğlu leave for Al Ahli, the Turkish club would need to replace his contribution and are reportedly looking at Lookman as a possible solution.
The Nigerian international’s versatility and attacking threat are believed to fit the profile Fenerbahçe want as they aim to strengthen their squad.
Lookman has become one of Nigeria’s most recognised attacking players, and his return to transfer discussions in Istanbul highlights the continued interest in his services.
For Fenerbahçe, the challenge will be convincing both the player and his current club that a move to Turkey is the right next step.
While no agreement has been reached, the possibility of a renewed approach means Lookman could once again become one of the major names linked with a move to the Turkish league.
The coming weeks could determine whether Fenerbahçe finally succeed in securing a player they have admired for some time.
