Inaki Williams retires from international football

Athletic Club forward Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his four-year spell with Ghana’s Black Stars.

His retirement brings an end to an international journey that saw him reconnect with his Ghanaian heritage and represent the country of his parents on football’s biggest stage

Despite never establishing himself as a prolific scorer for the national side, Williams was a regular member of the Black Stars setup following his switch and played a role in Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Williams ends his Black Stars career with 28 appearances and two goals, having represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cups and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

The 32-year-old Athletic Club forward made the announcement on social media, confirming that he is stepping away from international duty to focus on his club career and preserve his longevity at Athletic Club in Bilbao.

Williams’ decision comes at a time when the Black Stars are preparing for another phase of international football, with his departure leaving Ghana without one of its most experienced attacking options.

He said representing Ghana allowed him to “come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country.”
