Paris FC defender Samir Chergui has sustained an injury setback which has dealt a fresh blow not only to his club but also to Algeria’s hopes of reintegrating the centre-back ahead of key international competitions.
The 27-year-old, who had only recently returned to training earlier this month, has suffered a relapse that will delay his comeback once again.
The development raises renewed concerns about his fitness, particularly after a season disrupted by multiple injury issues.
Speaking ahead of Paris FC’s fixture against Le Havre, head coach Antoine Kombouaré confirmed the latest setback, explaining that the defender “felt a twinge in his thigh” and was unable to train with the squad.
The cautious tone reflects growing uncertainty over when the Algerian international will be fit to return to competitive action.
For Algeria, this situation is far from ideal.
Chergui had been viewed as a potential option for the national team setup, especially as the country looks to strengthen its defensive depth ahead of upcoming international assignments, including preparations linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle.
His struggles date back to November, when a hamstring injury prematurely ended his campaign. Although there were positive signs earlier this month when he resumed training, this latest relapse suggests that the road to full recovery remains complicated.
The defender had also attempted a return during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations period, only to encounter further physical problems, underlining a pattern of recurring setbacks.
For both club and country, the inability to rely on a fully fit Chergui has become an ongoing concern.
At Paris FC, his absence adds to an already stretched squad dealing with multiple unavailable players.
However, Kombouaré has opted not to dwell on the negatives, instead highlighting the opportunity for other members of the team to step up and fill the void left by the injured defender.
From an Algerian perspective, Chergui’s situation is particularly frustrating given the timing.
Meanwhile, another player out of Algeria’s squad is Anis Hadj Moussa after sustaining a hamstring injury.
