Algeria and Austria share six-goal thriller to seal World Cup knockout places

Algeria and Austria booked their places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after playing out a dramatic 3-3 draw in a pulsating Group J finale at Kansas City Stadium.

With qualification on the line for both sides, the match had been surrounded by speculation that a draw would suit each team.

Instead, the two nations produced one of the most entertaining contests of the tournament, trading goals throughout an enthralling 90 minutes before Austria struck a late equaliser to ensure both teams progressed.

Austria took the lead through veteran striker Marko Arnautović, who finished confidently after the Europeans made a bright start.

Algeria responded in spectacular fashion as Rafik Belghali capitalised on a defensive mix-up before unleashing an emphatic finish to restore parity. The Desert Foxes grew in confidence and carried the momentum into the remainder of the first half, but neither side could find another breakthrough before the interval.

The second period continued at a relentless pace. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s advantage with a composed finish after a flowing attacking move, only for Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez to once again haul his side level with a clinical strike.

As the clock ticked towards full time, Algeria appeared to have completed a memorable comeback when Mahrez struck again, putting Vladimir Petković’s side 3-2 ahead and seemingly sending them through as group runners-up.

However, Austria refused to surrender. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Saša Kalajdžić rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser, sparking celebrations among the Austrian players and supporters as both nations secured the point they needed to advance.

The result saw Argentina finish top of Group J after defeating Jordan in the other group fixture, while Austria ended second and Algeria progressed as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Iran, who had been relying on a winner in Kansas City to keep their hopes alive, were eliminated.

The contest inevitably drew comparisons with the infamous 1982 World Cup meeting involving the same two nations, when the so-called “Disgrace of Gijón” eliminated Algeria.

This time, however, there was little resemblance to that controversial encounter, with both teams delivering an open, attacking spectacle filled with momentum swings and late drama.

Algeria will now face Switzerland in the Round of 32, while Austria take on Spain as both sides continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
