Cameroon keeper Onana committed to fighting for first-choice role at Man Utd

Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana has signalled his commitment to staying at Man Utd and competing for the first-choice spot ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 29-year-old, who has faced scrutiny since joining the Premier League giants, is reportedly determined to prove himself and reclaim the No.1 role at Old Trafford.

Onana’s stance comes amid ongoing discussions within the club about goalkeeping options for next season.

Onana joined Manchester United with high expectations after impressive performances in European competitions, including his time at Ajax and Inter Milan, where his shot-stopping and ball distribution drew widespread praise.

However, his debut season in England has been mixed, with inconsistent performances leading to questions over his long-term status at the club which led to the signing of Senne Lammens.

Despite these challenges, the Cameroon international remains confident in his abilities.

“Sources close to the player indicate that Onana remains confident in his abilities and views the upcoming season as a key opportunity to reassert himself within the squad hierarchy,” a club insider said.

Earlier in the season, Onana was sent on a season-long loan to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, giving him regular playing time and a chance to regain match sharpness.

Now back at Manchester United, he faces competition from other goalkeepers in the squad, but his determination to secure the starting spot appears unshaken.

For Onana, the upcoming campaign represents a crucial period.

With Manchester United preparing for a busy domestic and European schedule, the goalkeeper sees the next season as a chance to cement his role as the club’s long-term first-choice.

Coaching staff reportedly value his shot-stopping skills and ability to play out from the back, key traits in Erik ten Hag’s tactical system.

Onana’s willingness to fight for his place may also be a signal to the club hierarchy that he is committed to meeting the high standards expected at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are likely to assess all goalkeeping options over the summer, but Onana’s resolve to stay and compete sends a strong message.

His return could shape the club’s strategy between the posts as they aim to reclaim Premier League and European glory.

As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Onana to see if he can translate his determination into performances that make him Manchester United’s undisputed No.1 once again.
