Inter Milan striker Bonny chooses Ivory Coast over France

Franco-Ivorian striker Ange-Yoan Bonny has officially committed his international future to Ivory Coast national football team, ending speculation over his nationality choice ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 22-year-old forward, who currently plays for Inter Milan, confirmed his decision during an official ceremony held at the Ivorian Consulate General in Milan.

The event, which took place on 30 April, was attended by Ivorian ambassador Philippe Gauze, diplomatic officials and representatives close to the player.

Bonny, who had previously represented France national under-21 football team on two occasions in 2024, will now represent the Elephants at senior international level instead of continuing within the French national team structure.

His announcement was viewed as an important moment for Ivorian football, particularly as the country continues efforts to strengthen its squad ahead of future major international competitions.

“Happy to join the Elephants,” Ange-Yoan Bonny stated simply in a video published by the Ivorian newspaper Fratmat.info.

The striker’s decision provides Ivory Coast with another attacking option at a time when the national team is seeking to build a competitive squad capable of challenging on the international stage.

Bonny arrives with growing experience at club level following a strong campaign in Italy. During the current season, he has made 44 appearances for Inter Milan, scoring seven goals and contributing six assists across all competitions.

His performances have attracted attention due to his mobility, physical presence and versatility in attack. Capable of operating in multiple offensive roles, Bonny is regarded as one of the emerging young forwards of Ivorian heritage currently playing in European football.

The timing of his international switch is also significant. With preparations for the 2026 World Cup approaching, Ivory Coast are looking to strengthen both the quality and depth of their squad, particularly in attacking areas.

The national team has increasingly focused on attracting dual-nationality players developed in European football systems, viewing them as important additions capable of raising the team’s overall competitiveness.

Bonny’s choice reflects a broader trend seen across African football, where several players eligible for multiple nations have opted to represent the countries of their heritage at senior international level.

For Ivory Coast, securing the commitment of a player who progressed through the French youth system is considered another positive step as the federation continues planning for the future.

Supporters are also expected to welcome the decision enthusiastically given Bonny’s performances in Serie A and his growing reputation within European football.

Attention will now turn to how quickly the striker adapts to international football with the Elephants and whether he can replicate his club form on the international stage.

As Ivory Coast continue preparations for upcoming tournaments, Bonny’s arrival offers fresh optimism and further strengthens a national team eager to remain competitive among Africa’s leading football nations
